Minecraft and Scratch

At the beginning of this week our public computers were replaced with brand new models, and they  come with Minecraft and Scratch installed!

You no longer have to wait for our scheduled Minecraft programs to play, you can do so on your own time now. All you need is your library card!

Never heard of Minecraft? Minecraft is a single or multiplayer video game that can be played in creative or survival mode. You can build structures or anything you can imagine from blocks and defend them against monsters (only in survival mode).

Here are a couple of websites to get you started:

or checkout one of the many Minecraft books from the library:

The same goes for Scratch. If you feel like creating your own little video game, use Scratch at the library to do it!

What is Scratch? Scratch is a programming language to create your own interactive stories, games, and animations.

For help with Scratch, click here or get any of these or other Scratch books from the library:

Welcome!

Hello there!
Many of the young people that attend my programs, come to book club, or visit the library to do research for school papers, are asking me for information that is of interest to other teens as well. I’ve always thought it would be nice to have one “place” that’s easily accessible to put all this teen specific information together. Well, it looks like that’s finally happening! I’ve been assigned to create a blog with a library related theme for one of my graduate school classes, and since teens are my business at the library, I am going to dedicate this blog to topics related to teen library services.
I know you’re all digital natives who love technology. So as long as you remember the name of this blog, you’ll always have access to the information here. No more losing scraps of paper with the title of the next selection of the teen book club or forgetting the date of the volunteer fair! Read the blog, and keep up-to-date!

On that note, I have exciting news to share with you book enthusiasts out there! The Festival of Words (FOW) 2015 is coming up soon! Authors Emily Danforth, Melinda Lo, and Kwame Alexander will be there! FOW is a free one-day literacy conference for secondary students that focuses on young adult literature, poetry and writing. Meet the authors, attend lectures, discussions, and workshops.
When: Saturday, February 28th, 8:30am-2pm
Where: Appoquinimink High School, Middletown

Mark your calendars! Registration will open at the end of January.
For more info, check out the FOW website.
